Additions: | Edwin Jackson (SP), Ian Kennedy (SP), Aaron Heilman (RP), Bobby Howry (RP), Kelly Johnson (2B), Tony Abreu (INF) |
Losses: | Max Scherzer (SP), Daniel Schlereth (RP) |
Free Agents: | Doug Davis (SP), Scott Schoeneweis (RP), Chad Tracy (1B/3B) |
Pitching |
Rotation: | Brandon Webb, Dan Haren, Edwin Jackson, Ian Kennedy |
Closer: | Chad Qualls |
Analysis: |
The Dimaondbacks are still looking for a fifth starter to fill out their rotation. They have a couple options in the minors or could elect to go with Billy Buckner or Kevin Mulvey.
Webb will be coming back from missing almost all of 2009 with an injury. Haren is still a top pitcher and continues to be near the top in quality starts. The loss of Max Scherzer is a big one but the additions of Edwin Jackson and Ian Kennedy bring a solid end to the rotation. Expect great things from the D-Backs top four in 2010. |

Lineup: | Chris B. Young (OF), Justin Upton (OF), Eric Byrnes (OF), Mark Reynolds (3B), Stephen Drew (SS), Kelly Johnson (2B), Conor Jackson (1B), Miguel Montero (C)
|
Analysis: |
The Diamondbacks continue to have one of the youngest starting 8 as anyone in the league. Eric Byrnes continues to fill the veteran role but missed most of last season due to injury. Expect the same again this year from Byrnes.
Miguel Montero, Mark Reynolds, and Justin Upton all had amazing seasons in 2009 and are projected to near their same numbers as last year.
Stephen Drew wasn't able to follow up his 2008 numbers but is still considered a top SS for fantasy owners. Expect better power numbers for him in 2010.
Conner Jackson missed most of 2009 with Valley Fever. He doesn't project as a power hitter from a power-heavy position but his numbers could be serviceable in a UTIL spot. |
|
Additions: | Miguel Olivo (C) |
Losses: | Garrett Atkins (3B), Jason Marquis (SP), Joel Peralta (RP) |
Free Agents: | Yorvit Torrealba (C), Matt Herges (RP), Joe Beimel (RP), Jason Giambi (1B) |
Pitching |
Rotation: | Ubaldo Jimenez, Aaron Cook, Jorge De La Rosa, Jason Hammel, Jeff Francis |
Closer: | Huston Street |
Analysis: |
The Rockies rotation showed signs of greatness in 2009. Though they weren't flashy, they still got the job done. Ubaldo Jimenez is quickly becoming one of the premiere power pitchers in the majors and improved across the board last season. Jorge De La Rosa continues to show dominant stuff but struggles at times. Aaron Cook continues to deliver solid innings without anyone noticing.
The addition of Jason Hammel to the rotation during the 2009 season may have sparked the other starters. Hammel threw together two months of 3.00+ ERA ball and was below 5.00 in two others. Look for Hammel to be a solid spot-starter next season
Huston Street looked like the Street of old in 2009 but be careful of his injury record. The Rockies should win plenty of games for him to close next season. |
Hitting |
Lineup: | Dexter Fowler/Ryan Spilborghs/Seth Smith (OF), Brad Hawpe (OF), Carlos Gonzalez (OF), Ian Stewart (3B), Troy Tulowitzki (SS), Clint Barmes (2B), Todd Helton (1B), Chris Iannetta/Miguel Olivo (C)
|
Analysis: |
Garrett Atkins is officially gone in Colorado, leaving the third-base spot for potential 30 homerun hitter Ian Stewart.
Troy Tulowitzki had an impressive 2009 campaign and all signs point to him continuing the trend next season.
Carlos Gonzalez and Dexter Fowler burst onto the scene last season and look to make the opening-day roster in the outfield. One has to assume Gonzalez has a spot after raking in the 2009 playoffs. Fowler will have some competition from Seth Smith and Ryan Spilborghs.
Helton and Barmes continue to produce at their positions and are draftable in all leagues. Chris Iannetta had a sorry year so the Rockies acquired Miguel Olivo in the offseason to provide some support. |
|
Additions: |
Jamey Carroll (INF) |
Losses: | Randy Wolf (SP), Juan Pierre (OF) |
Free Agents: | Brad Ausmus (C), Jon Garland (SP), Vicente Padilla (SP), Orlando Hudson (2B), Mark Loretta (INF), Jim Thome (1B), Guillermo Mota (RP) |
Pitching |
Rotation: | Chad Billingsley, Hiroki Kuroda, Clayton Kershaw, Scott Elbert/Eric Stults/James McDonald |
Closer: | Jonathan Broxton |
Analysis: |
The Dodgers are still looking for an ace to emerge instead of shopping for one. Kershaw has the tools but is still developing into a major league caliber pitcher. Billingsley had a disappointing season but is still young enough to improve.
There are a couple players who could emerge as keys to the Dodgers' success next year. Scott Elbert has been a top prospect for years and may have the opportunity to show he skills as a starter in 2010. James McDonald has decent stuff but hasn't proven his worth in the bigs just yet.
Jonathan Broxton continues to rock the fantasy world with his high-powered pitches. Look for over 100 K's from him in 2010 |
Hitting |
Lineup: | Matt Kemp (OF), Andre Ethier (OF), Manny Ramirez (OF), Casey Blake (3B), Rafael Furcal (SS), Blake DeWitt (2B), James Loney (1B), Russell Martin (C) |
Analysis: |
The Dodgers have one of the best outfields in the major leagues with Ramirez, Kemp, and Ethier. Kemp continues his ascension to the ranks of the fantasy elite while Manny and Ethier continue to do what they do. Expect impressive numbers from all three.
Furcal played well below expectations in 2009 and, at his age, don't expect many improvements, let alone an entire season of baseball. Russell Martin also continued his decline and is now far from the feared fantasy catcher he once was.
James Loney continues to post solid numbers but his lack of power and speed keep him low on draft charts. |
|
Additions: |
No one of note |
Losses: |
Henry Blanco (C), Edgar Gonzalez (INF) |
Pitching |
Rotation: |
Chris Young, Clayton Richard, Kevin Correia, Wade LeBlanc, Mat Latos |
Closer: |
Heath Bell |
Analysis: |
Nothing about this rotation excites the fantasy world, aside from keeper leagues. Chris Young, Clayton Richard, and Kevin Correia should all be serviceable as 5th or 6th starters in most formats.
Mat Latos and Wade LeBlanc could show signs of dominance but expect more from LeBlanc in 2010.
Heath Bell performed well during his first season as a closer. Feel free to draft him high as a closer. |
Hitting |
Lineup: |
Will Venable (OF), Chase Headley (OF), Tony Gwynn (OF), Kevin Kouzmanoff (3B), Everth Cabrera (SS), David Eckstein (2B), Adrian Gonzalez (1B), Nick Hundley (C) |
Analysis: |
The Padres will have to rely on their shaky youngsters in 2010. Adrian Gonzalez is the only player that could bring consistent stats for his owner. The front-office may be looking to trade Gonzo at some point during the season, which could lower the value of Padres hitters.
Kyle Blanks is a prospect to watch as his bat is major-league ready. Chase Headley could produce solid stats in 2010 but don't rely on him as your OF/3B. |
|
Additions: |
Mark DeRosa (INF/OF) |
Losses: |
Brad Penny (SP), Justin Miller (RP), Bobby Howry (RP), Randy Johnson (SP) |
Free Agents: |
Rich Aurilia (INF), Bengie Molina (C), Randy Winn (OF), Noah Lowry (SP) |
Pitching |
Rotation: |
Tim Lincecum, Matt Cain, Barry Zito, Jonathan Sanchez, Madison Bumgarner |
Closer: |
Brian Wilson |
Analysis: |
The Giants have quite the starting rotation heading into 2010. Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain both could make a bid for the NL Cy Young.
Jonathan Sanchez and Barry Zito are solid pitchers who will end up with ERAs in the 4s which would help the end of fantasy baseball roations.
Madison Bumgarner is an interesting Rookie of the Year candidate. He lost some mojo off his fastball in 2009 so pay attention to him in spring training. |
Hitting |
Lineup: |
Fred Lewis (OF), Aaron Rowand (OF), Nate Schierholtz (OF), Pablo Sandoval (3B), Edgar Renteria (SS), Freddy Sanchez (2B), Aubrey Huff (1B), Buster Posey (C) |
Analysis: |
Pablo Sandoval's value skyrocketed after his impressive 2009 campaign. Look for his numbers to be similar to last season but he loses his catcher eligibility next season.
Lewis, Rowand, and Renteria had ho-hum season last year and there is no indication they will fair much better in 2010.
Buster Posey could be an interesting late-round pick for managers without a solid catching option. His bat appears to be major-league-ready but it remains to be seen if the Giants will give him the at-bats next season.
