A strong finish to the 2009 season has earned an extra season with the .
Giambi agreed to a one-year contract to back up at first base and provide manager Jim Tracy with some left-handed power off the bench.
Last season started poorly for Giambi as he batted .193 with only 11 HR in limited action with the Oakland A’s. After Oakland released him in August, he signed with the Rockies and posted a strong .292/.452/.583 (AVG/OBP/SLG) line, albeit in just 31 plate appearances.
Barring injury, it’s unlikely Giambi sees more than sporadic action this season. If Helton does miss time at some point, Giambi’s power potential in Coors Field would make him somewhat interesting, but he’s not worth drafting outside of the very deepest leagues.
