The battle for the New York Yankees fifth rotation spot heated up yesterday as both Phil Hughes and Joba Chamberlain pitched against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Hughes pitched first and posted the more effective stat line, going 2 innings, giving up one hit and walk. Unfortunately the hit was a home run to Sean Rodriguez.

The day was not good to Chamberlain, who was coming off an illness. He went 1.1 innings, giving up 3 hits and 3 walks and five earned runs. Not a great line. His runs were compounded when reliever Kevin Whelan couldn't get an out and let all of Joba's runners score.

During the game, Chamberlain said he was focusing on getting his legs back under him after being sick. Don't read too much into this start as it is still early in the Spring.

Manager Joe Girardi stated that he will not be focusing on game results and instead will look at who is making their pitches.

This is a situation to watch for all fantasy managers as both youngsters could post solid seasons in the fifth slot for the Yankees. In leagues with holds, managers should pick up whoever loses the battle since they will be setting up for Mariano Rivera.
