Ask the Juice: Looking for Some Bench Help

Spencer asks: I'm looking for some quality help on my bench in a deep, 14 team league. Some of the guys I have noticed still available are Troy Glaus, Aubrey Huff, Kyle Blanks, Cameron Maybin, Randy Ruiz, Matt LaPorta for hitters. Also for pitchers I could get Homer Bailey, Chris Young, Justin Masterson, Jon Garland, Kyle Kendrick, or Ian Snell. Do you see any of these guys as worthy of picking up for some bench depth or do you have any other guys you could suggest? Thanks!

Hey Spencer, thanks for the question! In this situation, without any info about the make-up of your team, I would lean towards the younger high-upside guys. These are the ones that might start out as bench players for you but may end up forcing themselves into the starting line-up during the season.

The names that stick out to me for the hitters are Kyle Blanks, Cameron Maybin, and Matt LaPorta. All of them were considered top prospects not too long ago and all have the ability to produce in the majors once given a full-time role.

If you're looking for power then Blanks and LaPorta are your guys and if you need some speed then I would give Maybin a chance.

The one name for pitching that caught my eye was Chris Young, who I feel could have a nice bounce back year and be a nice sleeper pitcher. Justin Masterson and Homer Bailey are worth keeping an eye on but I wouldn't jump to add them until they show they can help your team this year.

I wish I could suggest some other names for you but every league is different and has different available players. I would also think about looking for some good middle relievers who can help you with some strikeouts, good ratios, and possibly vulture some saves and wins.
