Nate Schierholtz – Age 24 – Level AAA

2008 Numbers: 88 games, 58 Runs, 15 HR, 65 RBI, 9 SB, .314 AVG

After the 2007 season it appeared that Schierholtz would make the San Francisco Giants roster in 2008. The Giants made some off-season moves that resulted in the addition of Aaron Rowand which led to Schierholtz being the odd man out.

Schierholtz's .304 average in 39 Major League games at the end of 2007 gave fantasy owners a glimpse into the future San Francisco outfield. His 2008 numbers haven't disappointed with a .314 average and great production, including 45 extra-base hits.

With his addition to the 2008 Olympic roster, Schierhotlz's gained a whole new audience and should be on more draft lists heading into the 2009 season. A late season call-up is still possible as the Giants have played themselves out of the National League West and continue to sport one of the oldest rosters in baseball.

If you are in a keeper league, Schierholtz could be a late season addition for teams looking to next year. For head-to-head and roto leagues, keep Schierhotlz on your radar as a late round pick to boost your outfield. If he gets called up at the end of 2008, keep an eye on his numbers as he could have an immediate impact in the Bay area.

Each week "Almost Ripe" features a maturing minor leaguer who could see major league time in the near future.
