surprised us all with his 2008 Cy Young campaign – winning 22 games and posting career-best numbers in every category. Looking forward to the 2009 season, who could be 2009's Cliff Lee? Which starting pitcher will bring his nastiest stuff?
Keep in mind that this list does not contain players whom already dominate their respective leagues.

Shields has been a solid pitcher the last two seasons, posting numbers worthy of a number two pitcher. 2009 could be his year to shine. Tampa Bay is maturing along with Shields and could bring his 2009 wins close to 20.
Look for 220 innings, 18 wins, 185 Ks, and a 3.20 ERA as a low-end estimate.

Slowey has one of the best strikeout-to-walk ratios in the majors (123 Ks to 24 Bbs) which could help him dominate in 2009. His minor league numbers are even more impressive and he is still learning how to pitch in the major leagues. His only downside is his propensity to give up long balls (22 HRs in 27 games in '08). This kids reminds many of a young Greg Maddux.
Look for 200 innings, 17 wins, 150 Ks, and a 3.50 ERA.

Everyone had this guy pegged as a 2008 Rookie of the Year candidate but an early season knee injury stole most of his season. Gallardo's nasty stuff and competitive spirit will make his 2009 campaign successful. His 1.88 ERA in four 2008 starts should give you a feeling of what to expect in 2009.
Look for 200 innings, 15 wins, 190 Ks, and a 3.40 ERA.

Coming back mid-way through the season from elbow surgery, Johnson was impressive in his 14 starts with the Marlins. His strikeout numbers have always been there but he can be wild at times. 2009 should mark a return to his promising 2007 season.
Look for 190 innings, 15 wins, 160 Ks, 3.30 ERA.
